James H. Holt is a founding partner of Betts & Holt LLP. Throughout his career, Mr. Holt has been involved in various fields of law related to the energy industry. He has witnessed and had direct involvement in the evolution of those fields of law, ranging from the petroleum price and allocation regimes of 1970s-era federal law, through the traditional utility-type, and subsequently competition-based, regulation of natural gas and electricity. In the emergent commercial, regulatory, and financial environment, the natural gas and electric power sectors of the energy industry are being impelled toward market-based pricing and competitive economic operations and strategies, and Mr. Holt has played a central role on behalf of clients throughout this process.

Mr. Holt has represented one of the nation’s largest local gas distribution companies and numerous members of the natural gas and petroleum producing sectors, including various affiliates of Fortune 500 companies. For a number of years he has represented the principal trade association of the Canadian petroleum industry in regulatory proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and related court proceedings. Mr. Holt has advised financial institutions in connection with various energy projects and issues.
